Former US President Donald Trump was evacuated to a safe space after gunshots were heard in the crowd during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.
According to a White House spokesperson, the suspect and at least one attendee were killed, while two others were injured. Trump was visibly bleeding from his right ear as he was removed from the stage. He later stated he was "fine" and undergoing a check-up, recounting the moment he realized something was wrong as a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the lead in the investigation. An FBI spokesperson said, "The FBI has assumed the role of the lead federal law enforcement agency in the investigation of the incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred earlier today in Butler, Pennsylvania."
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, thanked law enforcement and emergency personnel for their quick response. The Secret Service, represented by Anthony Guglielmi, confirmed the incident and stated it is now an active investigation, with Trump being safe.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris both condemned the violence, expressing relief that Trump was not seriously injured and offering prayers for all affected. Biden called for national unity against such violence, while Harris emphasized the need to condemn this abhorrent act to prevent further incidents.
Biden also gave his formal remarks condemning the attack and stating that he spoke to Trump. He offered condolences for the attendee who was killed.
