With the permission of management in advance, Infosys has permitted employees to take on "gig" jobs on the side.
With the approval of supervisors and under the condition that such an engagement does not compete with the company, or its clients, or create a conflict of interest, Infosys has permitted employees to take on "gig" jobs on the side.
The business explained how staff members can take on "gig" labour in an internal email to employees.
Since it gives staff members the opportunity to pursue a second source of income and their passion for technology, although, with strict restrictions, the move may help the business solve some attrition issues.
However, it neither defined "gig" work nor referred to it as "moonlighting."
The most recent action comes at a time when the controversy about moonlighting is grabbing media attention. Moonlighting is the practice of employees doing multiple jobs at once by taking on side employment.
In its Q2 earnings report, Infosys said unambiguously that it opposes moonlighting and that it had fired workers who have held two jobs in the previous year.
"Any employee who chooses to take up gig work may do so with the prior consent of their manager and BP-HR and in their spare time for establishments that do not compete with Infosys or Infosys' clients," Infosys stated in an email to staff.
According to Infosys, it relies on its employees to make sure that this does not affect their capacity to engage with the organisation successfully.
Moonlighting has been criticised by a number of IT firms, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCLTech, IBM, and Wipro. These firms claim that it is unethical and violates their employee code of conduct. The controversy started when 300 employees of Wipro were let go when it was discovered they were working for other companies.
Prior to Infosys, Tech Mahindra let workers work on extracurricular activities. The CEO of Tech Mahindra, C P Gurnani, said that as long as workers maintained their effectiveness and productivity, moonlighting was fine.
