Officials said on Sunday that the Delhi Police had arrested 21 people in connection with the violence that occurred during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the city's Jahangirpuri neighbourhood, including the "main conspirators" behind the clashes and another person who allegedly fired a bullet that hit a sub-inspector.


According to them, two adolescents have also been seized in connection with the event.


Md Aslam (21), a resident of a slum cluster in Jahangirpuri's CD Park, was also found with a pistol, which he allegedly used during the commission of the crime on Saturday evening, according to police.


According to Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest), a FIR was filed on Saturday under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 307 (attempt to kill), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), and 147 (rioting), as well as provisions of the Arms Act.


"A total of 21 people have been detained, with two of them being minors. Three pistols and five swords were discovered in the custody of the accused "she stated. The matter has been moved to the Crime Branch, which will investigate the issue further with the support of the district police, according to officials.


"Md. Aslam, one of the defendants, discharged a gunshot that struck a Delhi Police sub-inspector. The accused's pistol was taken from his possession during the performance of the crime "Rangnani said.


According to her, Aslam was also found to be involved in a case filed at the Jahangirpuri police station in 2020 under Indian Penal Code sections 324 (voluntarily causing harm by dangerous weapons or means), 188 (disobedience to a duly promulgated public servant's order), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention).


She added that among the 21 arrested is Ansar (35), a Jahangirpuri resident who is accused of being one of the "principal conspirators" behind the incident.


He was also determined to have been previously involved in two cases of violence, as well as being arrested multiple times under preventative sections and booked five times under the Gambling Act and the Arms Act, according to the officer.


According to Ansar's wife, her husband is innocent.
