After serving as a Supreme Court judge for more than six years, Justice DY Chandrachud took the oath of office to become the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). The post was once held by CJI YV Chandrachud, his father.
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud succeeded Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Since D.Y. Chandrachud is the only son to succeed his father, previous CJI Y.V. Chandrachud, as Chief Justice of India, his appointment has historical significance for the Indian judicial system.
The longest tenure of seven years to date as Chief Justice of India was served by Justice YV Chandrachud, who was appointed to the position in 1978 and retired in 1985. The longest in recent memory, his son, CJI DY Chandrachud, will hold office for just over two years.
YV Chandrachud sentenced Sanjay Gandhi to prison in a case involving the movie "Kissa Kursi Ka" when he was in office. The Indian government outlawed the movie, which was a satire of the political views of Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi, during the Emergency.
DY CHANDRACHUD graduated From st. Stephen's College in Delhi before attending the Delhi Law Campus Center to pursue a legal education. At the age of 39, he went on to become one of India's youngest senior advocates after earning two advanced degrees in law from Harvard University. He was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India right away in 1998.
He taught international law at Oklahoma University and comparative constitutional law at the University of Bombay from 1988 to 1997 while he was still a practising attorney.
CJI DY Chandrachud spent 13 years as a judge at the Bombay High Court after being appointed there in 2000. He was elevated to the highest court three years after being named chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013.
CJI Chandrachud enjoys hiking and the outdoors very much, but those who have been working with him since his appointment as a Supreme Court judge claim that his hobbies have taken a second priority.
Former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, who held the position for only 74 days, came before him. DY Chandrachud, CJI, will hold the position until November 10, 2024. Justices of the Supreme Court are eligible to retire at age 65.
