In a major rebranding move, Twitter, the popular social networking platform, has changed its iconic blue bird logo to a simple white "X" against a black background on its desktop version. The change, however, is yet to be reflected on the mobile app.
The announcement was made by Twitter's owner, the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. According to Musk, not only the logo but also the terminology used on the platform will be overhauled. Instead of "Tweets," the new posts will be referred to as "x's."
Musk, who is known for his ambitious projects, is aiming to create a "super app" called "X," representing his vision for a revolutionary social media platform. This idea has been a topic of discussion for months.
To signify the shift, Elon Musk updated his Twitter profile picture with the new "X" logo and added "X.com" to his Twitter bio.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, Musk expressed his intention to bid farewell to the Twitter brand, and eventually, the bird logo. He then shared an image of the new X branding projected on the side of Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco. The company's name has also been changed to X Corp.
The rebranding was well received by Twitter's new chief executive, Linda Yaccarino, who sees it as an exciting opportunity for the platform to evolve further and transform the way people communicate on a global scale.
The original blue bird logo, named "Larry" in tribute to basketball star Larry Bird, had been the face of Twitter since its co-founder Biz Stone designed it in 2012. Fans and users took to Twitter to express their emotions, with some mourning the loss of the iconic logo.
Jack Dorsey, Twitter's best-known co-founder, joined in the sentiment by sharing a tweet from Martin Grasser, the logo's original designer, with a goat emoji as a tribute to the "greatest of all time."
As the new branding takes hold on the desktop version, users await the X app's launch and anticipate the potential changes it could bring to the social media landscape.
