India's largest lake development programme, Amrit Sarovar, produced 8462 lakes in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious Amrit Sarovar project. On April 24, 2022, the prime minister unveiled a brand-new programme called Mission Amrit Sarovar with the goal of conserving water for the future.

In order to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the initiative aims to revitalise 75 water bodies in each district of the nation.

The mission encompasses all the states, including Assam and Rajasthan. On July 29, 2022, 80,034 sites had been identified, and 35,364 sites had begun construction. The task has been completed on 4,753 sites.

By building 256 Amrit Sarovars in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Lakhimpur Kheri has taken first place, followed by Gorakhpur and Pratapgarh, which have 244 and 231 lakes, respectively.

With the construction of 8,642 Amrit Sarovar (lakes), Uttar Pradesh became the nation's first state. Madhya Pradesh is placed second, followed by Jammu & Kashmir in third place, Rajasthan in fourth place, and Tamil Nadu in fifth place. They were apprised of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's directives by G. S. Priyadarshini, Director of the Rural Development Department.

15,497 Amrit Sarovar, of which 8,462 have already been developed, were found in various village panchayats.

There are now twice as many Amrit Sarovars as there were in Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu put together. Only one state in the nation, Uttar Pradesh, has built Amrit Sarovar in great numbers.

Additionally, the state will create 1.20 lakh Amrit Sarovars, the most in the nation.

Out of the 312 Amrit Sarovars in Lakhimpur Kheri, 256 have been finished.

It is noteworthy that the large-scale construction of Amrit Sarovars is also providing employment to a sizable section of the rural population in Uttar Pradesh. It has solved the irrigation problems of farmers and also increased their income. Apart from this, villagers are increasing their income by doing fish farming in Amrit Sarovar.
