Sonia Gandhi officially handed the baton to senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge during a ceremony today, describing the occasion as one of "relief."
Sonia Gandhi, who served as the party's president for 22 years over two terms, said she would remember the love and respect shown to her by the organization until her "last breath." She also acknowledged that the party was facing significant challenges but had previously overcome similar difficulties.
The AICC passed a resolution praising Sonia for her contributions, including lifting the party in difficult times and providing the nation with leadership that resulted in historic decisions on social welfare and ushered in systemic transparency during the UPA governments. This was at the party event where Kharge was installed as the Congress president, the first non-Gandhi leader in 24 years.
The party praised her leadership and referred to her as the "epitome of sacrifice." The feelings of the time overflowed. Sonia smiled when Kharge gave her a framed photo of her late husband, Rajiv Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister.
Sonia Gandhi stated that she was relieved to be released from the significant obligation the party placed on her, which she tried her best to fulfil to the best of her ability.
Prior to the event where he assumed official leadership of the Congress, Kharge paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and also visited the tomb for former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
KHARGE CALLS ON CONGRESS LEADERS TO TRANSMIT BHARAT JODO YATRA'S MESSAGE.
After officially becoming the Congress president, Kharge spoke at the occasion and urged the Congressmen to "carry forward the message of Bharat Jodo Yatra to every nook and cranny of the country."
"I want to rally the members of my Congress family today to spread the Bharat Jodo Yatra's message throughout the entire nation. The message of economic equality, preserving constitutional values, communal harmony, and providing Indian young with greater employment prospects", President of the Congress Kharge remarked.
"Let us inform the Indian people that Congress stands with them in their difficulties and aspirations, let them know that we will speak for them, and let them know that we will strive for India that our forebears, who shed their blood and sweat for the country, envisioned."
Rahul Gandhi, a Congress member, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party's general secretary, attended the ceremony at the AICC headquarters as well.
All members of the Working Committee, general secretaries, and in-charges submitted their resignations when Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the next Congress president so that the new leader could appoint his staff. After the election of the new president, it has been customary for all members of Congress to resign.
